October isn’t just about pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters—it’s Learning & Development Month! This is our time to shine the spotlight on personal and professional growth. We’re committed to helping our team members level up and stay at the forefront of the tech world.
Here’s a look at what Learning & Development means at Abusix, and how we’re helping you grow:
1. Learning & Development Budget: Invest in Your Future
Every team member has access to an annual learning and development budget. Whether you're eager to master a new programming language, take a leadership course, or attend that conference everyone’s buzzing about, we've got your back.
2. On-the-Job Training: Learn as You Go, Grow as You Work
At Abusix, every day is a learning day. You’re not just solving problems; you’re expanding your skill set. Working on real projects with a world-class team offers the perfect balance of challenge and support.
3. Conferences and Events: The World is Your Classroom
We know that some of the best learning happens outside the office, so we make sure our team members have the opportunity to attend conferences, workshops, and industry events. These experiences are a chance to soak in knowledge, get inspired, and bring back fresh insights that can help us all grow.
4. Working Students: Running Real Projects, Making Real Impact
Our working students don’t just take notes; they take charge! From day one, they’re entrusted with meaningful projects, gaining hands-on experience that sets them up for success. And it works – we recently converted four of our working students into permanent team members. It’s proof that learning and development at Abusix isn’t just theoretical – it’s a real pathway to career progression.
5. Onsite Workshops: Learning Together, Face to Face
In a world of remote work, it’s easy to forget the power of in-person collaboration. That’s why our onsite company events are so special. These events bring us together for hands-on workshops, idea sharing, and learning directly from each other. Whether we’re tackling complex technical challenges or brainstorming new strategies, these face-to-face moments spark innovation and connection. Plus, it’s a great way to reconnect with your colleagues, learn new tricks, and even have a laugh or two.
A Culture of Continuous Learning & Development
At Abusix, our success is directly tied to our team’s growth. Learning isn’t just an annual checkbox; it’s part of our DNA. From informal peer-to-peer knowledge sharing to formal development programs, we’re all about pushing boundaries, trying new things, and getting better every day. Let’s hear some insights from our team members:
Floy, Software Engineer and former working student, Germany
I started at Abusix in my first semester of uni. I had some prior work experience, and, more importantly, I had fiddled with open-source projects, mostly self-taught. It was very interesting to learn things at university and at work in parallel. There are certainly some aspects of project planning, decision-making, and teamwork that you cannot learn in a formal environment like a university; they just take a lot of practice and trial and error. Some people would say that all the theoretical material from uni is useless and that it should be more geared towards work; however, I disagree with that. For once, there is a lot of theoretical basics which don't come into play much in day-to-day work, but understanding them still is a useful tool for making architecture decisions, understanding subtle problems and tweaking performance. Of course I started with some small tasks without understanding the whole systems surrounding them. But as I continued to work and learn, I became more involved in projects, doing more fundamental refactorings, making more decisions, taking over projects, and finally starting some new projects on my own. I appreciate having been given the opportunity to build projects from the ground up fairly early on. Of course, looking back at the code now, I sometimes find bugs or design decisions that I would do differently now, but that is fundamentally a part of learning and not anything that will ever go away. An exciting transition was eventually being the person who had the most knowledge about specific projects and, hence, being the person who gets asked if anything needed to be changed or broken. Eventually, this also extended not only to projects but also specific technologies we use where I had done some learning on my own. The switch from a working student to a regular employee hence was a fairly seamless one: I already had ownership of multiple projects and was part of the architecture and decision-making process of my team. The one thing that changed was being able to focus and spend more time on work and not having to juggle that with exams and projects at uni.

My experience with learning on the job at Abusix is one of the best I've experienced in my years of working. I started off with having a great mentor who gave me almost like a crash course to learning the parts of the job I had no direct experience with. I was pointed in the best direction of what would be best for me to learn further, but also what would be knowledge I might delve too much into that wouldn't be as beneficial. There's also constant support when needed as everyone at the company is open and willing to share knowledge and explain things in an unassuming way.

I'm so grateful for the learning and development budget we all get working at Abusix, particularly the freedom to allocate it where we believe it will be most beneficial. Personally, I've chosen to use this budget each year to attend a developer conference with a group of colleagues. This choice serves two purposes: it exposes me to new ideas, best practices, and interesting talks, while also allowing me to form closer bonds with my remote coworkers. So far, I've had the opportunity to attend WeAreDevelopers in Berlin, Shift in Zadar, Chaos Communication Camp, and I'm looking forward to attending Web Summit in Lisbon soon. The flexibility of this budget is fantastic, as it allows those who prefer not to use it for conferences to enrol in courses, purchase books, or explore many other options for professional development.

At Abusix we have a Learning & Development budget for every team member per year. I was not used to being reminded to use my budget. In my previous jobs, I often had to fight for training. A lot of times I’ve been told there is no budget for training. Therefore, I’m really grateful to have the possibility to use a budget every single year at Abusix. I’m at Abusix for almost three years now and have already taken courses in various HR fields like Systemic Coaching, Employer Branding, Corporate Integration Management (BEM), and NLP Practitioner. The great thing is that it´s not just theory that I learn, I am able to practice in everyday work to enhance my knowledge. The coaching courses already helped me a lot in consulting team members and managers. I already had experience and training in Corporate Health Management. However, taking a course in Corporate Integration Management gave me more insights and practical tips at hand. Understanding Employer Branding as a holistic approach helped me establish it in Social Media (e.g., in posts and blog articles). Currently, I’m enrolled in the NLP Practitioner course, and I’m excited to practice my knowledge in my daily work.
