“My Network – My Rules” Clarified

It’s a widely accepted philosophy in the network operators’ world, and for good reason. Network operators have a deep-seated understanding of their network, making them the most appropriate manager and decision-maker. Operators that can work organically in their network are extremely well-informed and experienced, enabling them to manage their networks efficiently and uncover opportunities for improvement.

By setting and following their own network rules, managers can also pivot quickly, adjusting, and evolving their rules to fit within the constraints of the network. The everyday choices managers make about incoming and outgoing traffic are informed, based on their innate understanding of their network. Some operators even choose not to have rules for their network, enabling them to make on the fly, organic decisions.

As beneficial as it is to have network managers take complete ownership over their network, it also can cause them to overlook their blind spots. Fresh eyes, additional perspectives, and staying up to date with best practices is crucial, even if someone else is acting as an observer. If a network manager chooses to be the sole decision-maker for a network, they miss out on chances for growth and development.

Some network operators, while holding the “my network, my rules” mindset, don’t extend that courtesy to others. What many choose not to recognize is that all network operators can benefit from their preferred form of management, so the “my network, my rules” mindset must extend beyond oneself. If one network manager has the right to run his network by his own rules, so do the rest.
